10 Reasons I Love the Honda Rebel 500
When I started riding motorcycles, I wasn’t looking for the biggest bike, the fastest bike, or the bike that was going to impress everybody at the gas station.
I wanted a motorcycle I would actually want to ride.
Something approachable. Something I could handle without feeling like I was wrestling it every time I pulled into a parking lot. But I also didn’t want something I’d be bored with six months later.
For me, that bike ended up being the Honda Rebel 500.
After riding it, modifying it, traveling on it, and figuring out what kind of riding I actually enjoy, I’ve realized there are a lot of reasons this little motorcycle works so well.
1. It’s Not Intimidating
This was a big one for me.
Motorcycles can feel like a lot when you’re getting started. There’s the weight, the clutch, the throttle, stopping, turning, backing the thing out of the garage without dropping it…
The Rebel 500 just doesn’t have that big, intimidating presence.
You sit low. The controls feel manageable. The power doesn’t feel like it’s waiting for an opportunity to launch you into another zip code.
That doesn’t mean it’s boring. It just means the bike gives you a chance to get comfortable and actually enjoy learning.
2. It’s Easy to Handle
The Rebel is light enough and low enough that it feels very manageable.
That matters more than I realized before I started riding.
It’s one thing to ride a motorcycle down a straight road. It’s another thing entirely to maneuver one around a gravel parking lot, back it out of a space, make a tight turn, or deal with an awkward driveway.
Having a motorcycle that feels manageable at slow speeds makes riding a lot more enjoyable.
And for newer riders, I think that confidence matters.
3. It Hits a Really Good Sweet Spot
The 500 is right in that middle ground.
It has enough power to be fun and useful without feeling excessive.
You can ride around town. You can get out on back roads. You can take longer rides. You can load some gear on it and head out for the weekend.
It doesn’t feel like a tiny motorcycle, but it also doesn’t feel like you’re trying to manage a giant touring bike every time you stop for gas.
For the kind of riding I like to do, it’s a really good sweet spot.
4. You Don’t Have to Outgrow It
You hear this all the time with beginner motorcycles:
“You’ll outgrow that.”
Maybe. Maybe not.
Not everybody wants a bigger motorcycle.
If your goal is interstate touring at high speeds with a passenger and a mountain of luggage, then sure, eventually you may want something different.
But if you enjoy back roads, everyday rides, weekend adventures, and exploring at a more relaxed pace, the Rebel 500 can keep doing that for a very long time.
There’s no motorcycle law that says you have to keep moving up in engine size.
5. You Can Make It Whatever You Want
This might be one of my favorite things about the Rebel.
Stock Rebels are pretty simple motorcycles—and I mean that as a compliment.
They give you a blank canvas.
You can turn one into a little cruiser, give it more of a bobber look, set it up for touring, add luggage, change the seat, add a fairing, set it up for camping…there are a ton of directions you can take it.
Mine definitely doesn’t look exactly like it did when I bought it.
And that’s part of the fun.
6. There’s Stuff Everywhere for It
The Rebel has been incredibly popular, which means there is an enormous amount of aftermarket gear available.
Seats. Windscreens. Fairings. Luggage. Exhausts. Handlebars. Racks. Lighting. Storage.
You can go down a very deep rabbit hole.
Ask me how I know.
The upside is that you usually have plenty of options instead of being stuck with one obscure accessory that costs a fortune because only three people on earth make it.
7. It’s a Honda
This reason isn’t particularly glamorous.
But it matters.
Honda has a reputation for building motorcycles that are pretty straightforward and dependable.
When I’m planning to head out for a ride—or eventually strap camping gear to the bike and disappear for a weekend—I really appreciate boring things like reliability.
Sometimes boring is excellent.
8. It’s Inexpensive to Ride
Motorcycling can become an expensive hobby very quickly if you let it.
But the Rebel 500 itself is relatively economical to own and ride.
It doesn’t gulp fuel. Maintenance is manageable. Tires and other consumables aren’t in the same league as what you might spend on a much larger motorcycle.
Of course, that savings may immediately disappear when you discover all the accessories mentioned in reason number six.
Again…ask me how I know.
9. You Can Travel and Camp on It
This is where the Rebel surprised me.
No, it isn’t a giant touring motorcycle.
But you absolutely can travel on it.
Add some luggage, figure out what you actually need, and there’s no reason you can’t use a Rebel 500 for overnight trips or moto camping.
And honestly, I like that.
There’s something fun about taking a relatively simple motorcycle, packing what you need, and seeing where you can go.
You don’t need a huge adventure bike to have an adventure.
10. It Makes Me Want to Ride
This is probably the most important reason on the whole list.
I want to ride it.
That sounds ridiculously simple, but what good is a motorcycle that checks every box on a spec sheet if you walk past it in the garage and never feel like taking it out?
The Rebel makes me want to throw on my gear and go somewhere.
Sometimes it’s a longer ride. Sometimes it’s just wandering around on back roads. Sometimes I don’t really have anywhere to go at all.
And that, to me, is the whole point.
So, Is the Honda Rebel 500 a Good Motorcycle?
For the right rider, I think it’s a fantastic one.
It’s approachable without being boring, capable without being overwhelming, customizable without requiring you to rebuild the entire motorcycle, and versatile enough to grow with the kind of riding you want to do.
Is it the perfect motorcycle for everybody?
Of course not.
But if you’re looking for something manageable, fun, relatively inexpensive, and capable of everything from an afternoon ride to a moto-camping weekend, the Rebel 500 deserves a look.
Mine has become more than the motorcycle I started riding.
It’s become the motorcycle that makes me want to keep riding.
